The Mountain Beaver is only found in one location in the Bay Area - Point Reyes. The subspecies found here, the Point Reyes mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa phaea), is endemic to the area - found nowhere else. It is only known to occur in western Marin County, almost entirely within Point Reyes National Seashore.
Informative page about the species at Point Reyes by the National Park Service.
